ما الفائِدَةُ مِنْ وَثَنِ يَنحَتُهُ النَّحّاتَ؟
هُوَ لَيسَ سِوَى شَكلٍ مَسبُوكٍ
يَكذِبُ صانِعُهُ عَلَى نَفسِهِ!
لِأنَّهُ يَتَكِلُّ عَلَى تِمثالٍ أخرَسَ

What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it;
the molten image, and a teacher of lies,
that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?

刻める像、鋳像および偽りを教える者は、
その作者がこれを刻んだとてなんの益があろうか。
その作者が物言わぬ偶像を造って、その造ったものに頼んでみても、
なんの益があろうか。



وَيلٌ لَكَ يا مَنْ تَقُولُ لِخَشَبَةٍ: «استَيقِظِي!»
أوْ تَقُولُ «قُومِي!» لِصَخرَةٍ صَمّاءَ.
هَلْ يُعَلِّمَكَ التِّمثالُ؟
هَا إنَّهُ مَطلِيٌّ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالفِضَّةِ،
وَلِيسَ فِيهِ نَفَسٌ

Woe unto him that saith to the wood,
Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach!
Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver,
and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

わざわいなるかな、木に向かって、さめよと言い、物言わぬ石に向かって、
起きよと言う者よ。これは黙示を与え得ようか。
見よ、これは金銀をきせたもので、
その中には命の息は少しもない。ꗯ * ꖘ
