      In the winter of wet years the streams ran full-freshet, and
      they swelled the river until sometimes it raged and boiled,
      bankfull, and then it was a destroyer.

〇   冬の雨季には水流は最大限に増水し、川を溢れさせる。
　   それは時に川岸にあふれかえり、煮えたぎるような
　   怒涛となり、川の周囲を破壊する。

　　 The river tore the edges of the farm lands and washed whole
  　 acres down ;
     it toppled barns and houses into itself, to go floating and
     bobbing away.

　 　そして川は納屋をも母屋をも倒壊させ、浸水し、そして
　   引いていく。
